Award-winning and accomplished film director, writer, and editor with longstanding experience across film, television, film lecturing, and archive-based work. She is known for visually sophisticated and emotionally resonant storytelling in both documentary and short fiction formats. Her films have been screened at numerous international film festivals, broadcast by major UK and European broadcasters including the BBC, ARTE, Channel 4, Sky Arts, and SVT, and exhibited in international art institutions. Filmography
“Themerson and Themerson" (2010 - documentary, 72’): the love story of the art couple has been celebrated around the world and announced by Arte as the best documentary about art in 2011.
It has been shown in more than 50 international festivals (Future in Media award 2011).
"The man who made angels fly" (2013 - documentary, 64’) won IDFA Industry Award and premiered at Karlove Vary, Toronto Hot Docs and Goteborg. It takes us into the last journey of the greatest living marionette master, and his relation to his creations.
Wiktoria Szymańska also made shorts and video installations, “Walkwomen” in urban space, “Childhood” (about dance and female bodies). In 2014, she made a series of visual poems for Channel4 “In the cities - Sleepwalker” (visual poems, 5x5’).
“7 sheep” (2015 - fiction, 21’), CPH Directors Lab : a little girl of 5 years old has to be hidden in the mountains with the man who hasn’t seen anyone for 40 years. TIFF, official selection.
“Artur” (2019 – documentary, 60’) is an unusual story of a genius idiot outsider who doesn’t get a chance to belong anywhere in the modern society.
